在后街男孩小组发行《千禧情》到刚刚环球推出《黑与蓝"Black & Blue"》其间经历的96，320分钟里，小组发生了许多变化。这一行人不仅同过去不同了，而且也更加成熟了。他们投身商业﹑尝试全新的艺术形式，有的人还结了婚。但只有你亲自聆听他们的最新专辑你才能深刻的感到这些变化是多么显著。小组成员开始自己创作歌曲，加快了节奏并掺进了爵士风格，除此以外他们还尝试着在歌中加入拉丁城市气息。MTV新闻的Brian Hiatt和Robert Mancini有幸与小组成员A.J. McLean进行了交谈，询问了从他们初试作曲填词到专辑命名一系列问题。
MTV：这首歌在发声上更趋****化，至少共鸣部分如此。那你们在制作这张专辑时都设定了那些目标呢？
A.J.：当然，我们也要成长，随着乐迷和歌坛共同成长，我们不能总是停留在人们一开始给我们的"泡泡糖流行音乐"的定位上。不过我们不会来个360度的大转弯，不会走极端。比起《千禧情》，《Black & blue》无论在词曲还是歌曲本身的内涵上都有进步。若是和《Backstreet Boys》比起来进步就更大了。专辑中的歌每支都有所不同，乐曲各有特色毫不雷同，这也是这张专辑的一个显著特点。那些从一开始就听我们歌的乐迷也一样希望听到我们成熟一点，毕竟他们也长大了一些。
MTV：可专辑中也有节奏强烈的舞曲呀？
A.J.：对，与我们过去的所有专辑相比《Black & blue》的确收录了更多的快歌。
MTV：这张专辑里有什么能令人大吃一惊的新东西吗？
A.J.：我想能让乐迷﹑媒体和其他艺人感到惊奇的是我们自己参与了其中7首歌曲的创作。"Time"和"The Answer to Our Life"是我们五个人在巴哈马采风时一同写的。我自己写了"Yes I Will"的乐曲，它有点R&B和R.Kelly老派爵士乐味道。Howie写了"What Makes You Different Makes You Beautiful" 和"How Did I Fall In Love With You"两首歌。还有两首是我们和Max Martin, Rodney Jerkins, Babyface共同创作的。专辑中的歌特别是两首快歌与一般舞曲有很大的不同，它们内涵更深刻。我个人很喜欢"The Call"，它主要讲的是有关日常生活中恋人之间相互欺骗的故事。它讨论了恋爱中诚实和信任的问题。
